Hello!! My name is Don Orwell and this blog is dedicated to Superfoods, Superfoods Diet and Superfoods lifestyle. I’m a software developer from Toronto, married to a beautiful woman with whom I have 2 great kids. I decided to describe my weight loss experience in this blog and in several books and hopefully inspire people to start rethinking their eating habits. IT consultant by day, nutrition nerd by night :-).
I’ll start with some quotes from authorities:
“Our food should be our medicine and our medicine should be our food.” – Hippocrates 460 – 370 BC
“All diseases begin in the gut” – Hippocrates 460 – 370 BC
“In the United States and most Western countries, diet-related chronic diseases represent the single largest cause of morbidity and mortality. These diseases are epidemic in contemporary Westernized populations and typically afflict 50–65% of the adult population.” – Origins and Evolution of the Western Diet: health implications for the 21st century -American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
“The Public Health Crisis is Hiding in Our Food” – NY Times
“Childhood Obesity: A Global Public Health Crisis” – International Journal of Preventive Medicine
As you can see, processed food is destroying our health and our lives.
My weight went from 120 kg (265 pounds) to 75 kg (165 pounds) in 1994. I was an overweight 24 years old student then. And I should probably say that I was overweight since my early childhood. Between 1995 and 2000, I yo-yoed between 82 (180 pounds) and 94 kilos (207 pounds). Then I started to gain weight and beginning of 2004 I peaked at 275 pounds (125 kg). Luckily, Atkins diet was very popular at that time and in less than 6 months I went down to 90 kg (200 pounds) and managed to keep it for 3 years, although again I yo-yoed between 90 kg (200 pounds) and 102 (225 pounds) .
Then again, I started to gain weight in 2007 and went to 265 pounds (120 kg) in summer 2008.
And peaked at 275 pounds (125 kg) in February 2009.
Beginning of 2010 I’m again at 90 kg (200 pounds) and thanks to Superfoods, I have kept that weight ever since.
And in March of 2014, I decided to go below and now (August 2014), I’m at 81 kg (178 pounds).
I figured out that since I yo-yoed my weight for so many times and finally solved my weight issue, I’m fully qualified to write a book called “Superfoods Today for Yo-Yo Nation” :-). I didn’t know how to share that knowledge and at the end decided to have both blog and eBook about my dieting troubles. This blog is called Superfoods Today and my plan is to have a sort of “Superfoods Today” free newsletter where I would share Superfoods recipes and my discoveries about various Superfoods.
E.g., 2 days ago I read tons of stuff about organ meats and poppy seeds and it appears that both of them are Superfoods. I’m pretty sure that you don’t eat very often organ meats or poppy seeds, just like I don’t do.
Organ meats have lots of iron, zinc, choline, vitamin B12, vitamin D and some other B vitamins and some minerals. Beef heart, liver and kidney have highest concentration of coenzyme Q10, which is very important for energy production and prevent oxidative stress. Liver is rich in retinol (pre-formed vitamin A), folate, choline and vitamin B12. Who would say that these cheap pieces of meat are so healthy? Since I’m a gourmet and consider myself a very good cook, I’ll come up with some tasty recipes with organ meats. Actually, since my kids won’t eat them, I’ll have to conceal them somehow and share those recipes with you.
And who would say that poppy seeds are rich in fibers, oleic, linoleic mono-saturated fatty acids which are lowering bad cholesterol and increase good one. Plus they have tons of all possible B vitamins and some minerals. Again, I’m discovering facts about various superfoods that I rarely ate before and that happens almost daily.
Welcome aboard and feel free to read and comment!! My dieting story starts here …
